ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If you've ever wanted to start beekeeping, you can learn what it takes to start a hive this weekend.
The Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association is hosting a workshop and honey show.
On Saturday, Feb. 8 at the newly remodeled Holiday Inn in Sunset Hills, the association will host their annual Beekeeping Workshop from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
"We have two courses line up: one for absolute beginners and an experienced course," said Dan Brouck, President of Eastern Missouri Beekeepers Association. "
"(The beginners) will figure how to get started with the hives and learn about all the equipment that they will need, while (the experience course) will be for people who have been keeping bees for at least a year and we will get into some of the more details and the arts and science of beekeeping."
Brouck says beekeeping is pretty big in eastern Missouri with around 300 members in the association, and it isn't hard to start a colony.
"I live in the city and I have three hives in my postage stamp size backyard. I've had as many as five before. It's just the matter of getting the equipment, the bees, " said Brouck. "Most importantly, to have a group of people or someone who is a beekeeper or have been one that can help you through."
"It's really not something you want to do alone or just watch YouTube videos. You need people to talk to and look at what you are looking at too."
