ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - The St. Louis Sports Commission is asking for a portion of the city's Rams Settlement money. The Sports Commission is an independent non-profit and its Volunteer Chair Michael Loynd says that makes it hard to compete with other cities, "we're the only [sports commission] that receives zero public support, for the most part. Most receive money from the state, the city, hotel motel tax, a bid fund, something like that, and there's just no structure in place like that for us. "
The Commission is asking for a $5 million bid fund from the city's Rams money. The proposal requests sales taxes earned from events be used to replenish the fund as needed, with the rest going to the city to eventually repay the seed money -- and then some.
The St. Louis Sports Commission says the recent US Figure Skating Championship, NCAA Men's Frozen Four, and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament generated $1.5 million dollars in sales taxes for the city and roughly the same for the state, plus generated 35 million dollars in visitor spending.
