Erica Sinner wanted to do something nice for Thanksgiving this year. Inspired by a friend from out of town, she set a goal to make 30 Thanksgiving meals to deliver to people in need. After posting about it on Nextdoor, she had dozens of people who wanted to help her, and even local businesses offering to chip in.
Now, Sinner and volunteers are making 200 meals for people in the area. She told KMOX's Carol Daniel how meaningful the project has been.
"These families that have reached out, some of them have recently lost their jobs or they've recently lost family members or they're just really overwhelmed this year," she said. "We even have some families that have made the hard decision and the proud decision to leave a domestic violence situation — she's in a hotel with two dogs and her son, and this is life-changing for her in terms of really bringing the magic of thanksgiving to her kids at such a hard time."
Sinner said that hearing about her friend's Thanksgiving meals inspired her and made her realize how much of a difference a meal could make.
"I didn't realize the power a meal could have for someone. And I think we take it for granted sometimes for ourselves having families having a warm cooked meal," she said. "And now it's just, I mean, this is going to be in my heart for the rest of my life."
She said the most surprising aspect of this all was how quickly it came together and volunteers sprung into action.
"I posted this less than a week ago, I thought I was going to have it in my home, and within hours, and then within days, to have had the 200 meals, have families that want a meal and need a meal and are so grateful for a meal and then to also have all the drivers all of the prep all of the donations ahead of time — it almost was too easy, actually."
