City of Wichita employees got an email Friday saying that they were furloughed.
The city furloughed 301 employees because they could not work from home and were deemed non-essential. The furlough will go out to April 23.
Jim Jonas, strategic communications director for the City of Wichita, told KAKE-TV the decision to furlough was difficult, as those employees did nothing wrong. While they are on furlough, employees will still be able to get a paycheck, just not their normal one from work.
Jonas says because of the federal government's relief package, there is eighty hours of paid time for employees who are furloughed, along with accrued vacation or sick time.
Jonas says they are just $26 thousand short of being able to cover every furloughed employee for the full 30 days.
