Authorities say a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper shot the driver of a car he had just stopped Wednesday near downtown Topeka. The trooper and the male suspect were taken to a local hospital.
Melissa Underwood, spokeswoman for the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said the injured trooper was not shot. The condition of both men was not disclosed.
Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Adam Winters said the incident began when the trooper stopped a car shortly before 11 a.m. near E. 1st and Madison streets, an industrial area that sees little vehicle traffic. The car ended up against a power pole in a grassy area.
The KBI will take the lead in investigating the officer-involved shooting.
