KS Department Of Agriculture asks public to report unsolicited seeds

Unmarked seed packets are arriving in mailboxes around the United States with no explanation or reason, and with a return address in China. The package sometimes bears the name "China Post" and may be labeled as jewelry, small electronics, or some other item. The Kansas Department of Agriculture has been notified that several Kansas residents have received the packages. The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time.

The KDA advises Kansans who receive the package of seeds not to even open the packaging. Instead they ask individuals to contact KDA’s plant protection and weed control program at 785-564-6698, via email at KDA.PPWC@ks.gov, or at the complaint reporting portion of the KDA website.

Additionally the Better Business Bureau says the package may be a sign that personal information has been compromised as part of what is referred to as a brushing scam. They advise keeping a close eye on credit report, bank accounts, and credit card bills.

The KDA says that under no circumstances should the unsolicited seeds be planted.  The seeds could be invasive species, could introduce diseases to local plants, or could be harmful to livestock.
