42-year-old Manuel Vargas-Aliva was shot and killed in Planeview Park in the southeast part of Wichita, not far from George Washington Blvd. & the Kansas Turnpike.
The call originally came in as a possible stabbing, after a man found the victim with injuries on a park bench. It turns out Vargas-Avila had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was deceased on the scene.
Investigators believe the victim had been involved in some sort of a disturbance with other people at the park late Saturday evening when he was shot, before being found on Sunday afternoon. Police believe this was not a random incident; this was Wichita's 26th criminal homicide case of the year, and the first of two homicide cases on back-to-back days in the city.
