At a special meeting on Monday, the Wichita Board of Education voted to extend the 2020 fall break.

The board voted 6 to 0 to extend this year's fall break by three days and it will now happen from Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27.

The extension is due to the increasing numbers of COVID-19 in Sedgwick County.

USD-259 Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson said the district is feeling the effects of the virus' impact on the community.  "I want each and every one of you, the parents, the staff and the community to know that we are doing the best that we can.  Making the best decions that we can with the information that we have at the time, " Thompson said.

During the fall break, all USD 259 school buildings and support centers will be closed.

The BOE made a point of saying all certified and classified staff will continue to get normal pay.

There will not be makeup days for this. There were 1.5 days of makeup time already built into the schedule, so the teachers will have a half day later they can do personal development to make that up.

The board will next meet on Monday, November 30.
