A decision on passenger rail service for Wichita could come soon

Pete Mietzner
KNSS NEWS

The Kansas Department of Transportation has been taking public input this week on renewing passenger rail service through Wichita, north and south. Sedgwick County Commission Chair Pete Meitzner tells KNSS News he is hoping to hear something from the Federal Railroad Administration in December, regarding a passenger route from Oklahoma City through Wichita to Newton. Wichita hasn't had passenger rail service since 1979.

Construction to replace a nearly 70-year-old bridge southwest of Clearwater will start Monday. Meitzner says the county is responsible for the upkeep on more than 600 bridges. Many are small bridge over culverts in western Sedgwick County. Meitzner says it's "quite a burden" for the county.

Work continues on a temporary bad weather shelter for Wichita's homeless. Meitzner tells KNSS News the plan is to open the shelter on east 21st Street this week. He says HumanKind is working on last-minute details.

Meitzner commented during his weekly chat with Steve and Ted in the Morning on KNSS.
