A child is dead, and a woman received serious injuries in a fiery crash at a Quik Trip in Derby. It happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, in the 1400 block of N. Nelson, near Meadowlark and K-15 in Derby.
A police spokesman says a vehicle traveling on Meadowlark left the road and entered the Quik Trip parking lot, hitting a car that was filling at a gas pump.
The collision knocked the gas pump over, causing a fire. A girl, 3, who was in the car at the gas pump died. A woman pumping gas was transported to an area hospital with severe injuries. Fire crews managed to quickly put out the blaze.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured and has been talking with investigators. A team from Sedgwick County is also assisting in reconstructing the accident.
The Quick Trip has been temporarily closed.
An investigation is ongoing.
