Starting next year, all 106 hotels and motels in the city of Wichita must apply for a newly created city license.

Owners will have three months to submit their application for the lodging establishment license. It will require a valid license from the state, a $1 million insurance policy, the owner's contact information and a confirmation that they've read and understand the ordinance.

The license will cost $200 per year and will give the city the tools needed to address safety concerns like illegal dumping, pest control and violence. Establishments will no longer be able to charge by the hour.

The city will use state inspection data when the applicant files for the license. If problems arise, the city can inspect the property and not have to wait for the state.
