A colder start is greeting much of Kansas Friday, with morning temperatures in the teens and lower 20s and wind chills dipping into the single digits. Afternoon highs are expected to remain below normal, topping out in the upper 30s to low 40s.
Forecasters say a fast-moving, relatively weak storm system will sweep across the state late in the day. Rain and snow showers may develop this afternoon before changing to all snow by sunset. While widespread travel problems are not expected, drivers could encounter a few slick spots. Most locations are forecast to pick up an inch of snow or less.
Quiet but cooler-than-average weather is expected through the weekend. Morning lows will fall into the teens and 20s, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the 40s under mostly sunny skies and light winds.
Looking ahead to next week, a gradual warmup is on the way. After highs in the 40s Monday, temperatures are projected to surge into the 60s and 70s by Tuesday and Wednesday before another brief cool-down late in the week.
