At Wednesday's Sedgwick County Commission meeting, the board approved the county’s legislative platform for the upcoming 2026 session.

It includes four priorities, notably the county treasurer's office, tasked with running the tag office. While that is a state function and is typically funded by fees, for several years the county has used property tax funds to support it. The county wants that to change.

Other priorities include a request to replace the corrections funding formula, addressing the sales tax apportionment funding formula and finally the appraiser's office and rising property taxes.

Commissioner Jim Howell is optimistic that some of the county's platform will get approved.

The Kansas Legislature convenes on January 12, 2026.
