Coming up next week on New Year's Day, grocery prices in Kansas will drop, as the food sales tax falls from 2% to 0%.
In May 2022, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed a House Bill into law completely eliminating the food sales tax by 2025; local sales taxes still apply.
Foods qualifying for the sales tax elimination include basic grocery items such as produce, milk, eggs, bread, meat, bakery items, bottled water and soft drinks, candy, and dietary supplements.
Foods that do not qualify and will still be taxed at the state’s 6.5% rate include prepared foods that are ready to eat, or just need reheating. The tax does not apply to alcohol nor tobacco.
Grocery stores will have separate lines for food and non-food items on their receipts.
