The Harvey County Commission approved an agreement to purchase the building at 109/111 E. Seventh St. in Newton.
The Commission will acquire the property for $100,000. Finances for the purchase will come from remaining Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act funding.
The one-story office building sits directly south of the Harvey County Courthouse. It previously served as law offices owned by Gregory G. Nye. “The proximity of the building to the Courthouse, along with the timeliness with us reviewing our current facilities, really could not have worked out better,” said Harvey County Commission Chairman Don Schroeder. “We need to be planning for the future. This building helps us do that.”
In the short term, the Seventh Street property provides convenience for the County as it considers remodeling the Courthouse. Departments could temporarily move to the Seventh
Street building while renovations are made in their Courthouse offices. Long term, the building creates options for the County as it addresses space needs for itself and the Ninth Judicial District.
The County previously purchased a three-story facility at 215 S. Pine St. in Newton in 2022. That building – the long-time and current home of the Harvey County Health Department – is being remodeled as it becomes the future home to additional County departments.
Closing on the Seventh Street property is expected in mid-September.
