The KBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kansas City, Kansas, where a Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy was killed.
It began just before 3:30 p.m. Saturday. A woman called to request police assistance as she moved out of a residence, after a man threatened the woman and her friends with a firearm. Around 3:45 p.m., a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s deputy and a Kansas City, Kansas Police officer arrived. As they approached the front door, the man inside the home, identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris, of Kansas City, Kansas, fired multiple rounds at the officers. One of the rounds struck the deputy, 34-year-old Elijah Ming, while the KCKPD officer was uninjured.
As responding officers attempted to provide aid to Deputy Ming, gunfire was exchanged between the man and law enforcement. Harris was shot as he barricaded in the home.
Deputy Ming was transported to the hospital but died of his injuries.
Harris surrendered to police after 5 p.m., and was taken into custody. He was treated at an area hospital.
When the investigation concludes, the findings will be presented to the Wyandotte County District Attorney.
