An El Dorado Correctional Facility inmate died Friday night.
According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Joshua Matthews, 38, was found unresponsive in his cell. Staff immediately began life-saving measures and continued after EMS arrived, but were unsuccessful.
The cause of his death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
Protocol stipulates that when an inmate dies in KDOC custody, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
Matthews was serving a nearly 20-year sentence for three counts of convictions for the battery of corrections employees in Douglas County.
