Wichita native Kirstie Alley dies after private battle with cancer

Kirstie Alley has died at the age of 71 after a private battle with cancer. The actress’ children made the announcement on Twitter Monday night. True and Lillie Parker said their mother’s cancer was only recently discovered.

Alley’s breakout role was that of Rebecca Howe in the NBC sitcom Cheers for which she received an Emmy Award and Golden Globe in 1991. Her career spanned numerous TV shows and movies.

Alley's former "Cheers" co-star Reha Perlman said in a statement to Fox News Digital, "I've never met anyone remotely like her. I feel so thankful to have known her. I'm going to miss her very, very much."

Kirstie Alley was born in Wichita, a graduate of Wichita Southeast High School, and attended Kansas State University.
