The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon in Coffeyville. According to the KBI, just after 3 p.m. police conducted a traffic stop on a Ford pickup driven by 33-year-old Derik J. Trotter of Coffeyville. Trotter was connected to an active police investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that officers tried to detain Trotter to serve a search warrant for items in his possession. As they attempted to place Trotter in handcuffs he fought back and tried to escape. Two officers deployed tasers but Trotter continued to be combative. One officer fired his gun, striking Trotter, who died later at the Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.
