Sedgwick County Commissioners deferred a vote on a potential policy to address the county's housing shortage.

Under consideration was a policy to establish Reinvestment Housing Incentive Districts, or RHID. In 2023, state legislators authorized eligible cities and counties to designate a RHID, which would operate like Tax Increment Financing (TIF). It would capture all incremental increase in real property taxes created by a housing development project for up to 25 years and could reimburse eligible incurred costs or pay debt service on bonds within the district.

Commissioner Jim Howell said he was concerned about the county potentially missing out on property tax funds.

The county will gather input before drafting an updated policy to present to the board on April 10.
