In December 2024, the Wichita Police Department was requested to investigate the conduct of a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit.

Investigators from the WPD’s Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) carried out the investigation.

As a result, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office has charged Detective Shawn McMahon with two felonies, on counts of making a false writing, and interference with law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office said a review of McMahon revealed improper case closures and a failure to thoroughly investigate criminal complaints during a five-year period from 2019 to 2024.

Late last month, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said it initiated an administrative review of the cases that the detective managed after identifying potential issues.

Det. McMahon was assigned to EMCU in 2019, and transferred to the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) section in 2021.
