Sedgwick County Commissioners deferred a vote until next week to decide what role, if any, they will play in funding of an emergency winter shelter in northeast Wichita.
On Tuesday, the Wichita City Council unanimously approved the opening of the shelter near 21st and Grove. County Manager Tom Stolz says his staff needs more time to go over all of the information to decide how the county may respond. Stolz said the city would like the county to contribute $200 thousand toward the effort.
Commissioner Ryan Baty says he knows the location chosen is not ideal but added that all levels of government have a role to play in combating homelessness.
Commissioner Jim Howell said he has reservations about the county contributing to the shelter, and how that could place a double burden on taxpayers.
