Water service disconnections begin today for Wichita homeowners who ignored non-compliance notices regarding lawn irrigation system backflow devices. These backflow devices ensure that water potentially mixed with pesticides or fertilizers does not flow back into the city's water distribution system.
The City of Wichita requires homeowners have their sprinkler systems and backflow devices tested annually if their irrigation system is connected to the city's water system. Sprinkler systems that utilize well water are not subject to this federal requirement of the Safe Drinking Water Act. The annual backflow certification for Wichita water customers was due May 30.
Last week over 2000 door hang notices went out to accounts that are non-compliant. Those that are still not in compliance face water disconnection starting today. Residents may go to wichita.gov/backflow or call (316) 219-8916 for information on how to achieve compliance.
