The Wichita City Council has approved an ordinance change that will mirror a new state law that removes mandatory minimum sentencing requirements for those convicted of driving with a suspended driver's license if the suspension was due to an unpaid traffic citation.

Previously, the conviction carried a mandatory fine of $100 and five days in custody. The change will grant municipal court judges more discretion in the sentencing phase.

The new state law goes into effect on July 1st.

The council also approved the purchase of computer software that will address safety concerns within the transit department. The 5-year contract with Civix will cost the city around $222 thousand, an average of under $50 thousand per year.
