The city of Wichita moved one step closer to reforming its code of ethics policies.
Wichita City Council members and City Manager Robert Layton discussed the revised draft of the code of ethics that has been in the works for over a year.
The plan would create an ethics advisory board, with each member selected for a 2-year term, with the option for additional terms.
If elected officials violate the code, they would be required to first participate in ethics training. Subsequent violations would be grounds for fines and public censures
The Mayor and Council also agreed to strike the word "friend" from the proposed code, after they could not agree on a definition.
The final document will be presented to the council on May 11.
Back in January, a three and a half hour discussion on ethics reform led to heated exchanges between Mayor Brandon Whipple and Council member Jeff Blubaugh.
