The city of Modesto is reviewing a permit to allow the National Straight Pride Coalition group to hold a "straight pride" parade in August.
The event is slated to take place on August 24, at the Graceada Park.
Modesto residents are outraged about the possible parade.
“Permits to host any event are granted based on operational feasibility, not based on values and certainly not based on any endorsement of beliefs,” Thomas Reeves, community and media relations officer for Modesto told the Los Angeles Times. “So although the city does not share in the beliefs of some groups that choose to hold their events here, we may not be able to deny a permit based on an organization’s values.”
Organizer of the event, Don Grundmann, a San Leandro-based chiropractor and herbalist swears the event will promot herterosexuality, masculinity, femininty babies, pro-life, and "everything that made our country great," according to the LA Times.
Grundmann is the chairman of the Constitution Party of California and the self-described director of the National Straight Pride Coalition, and uncsuccessfully ran for U.S. Senate five times.
“We’re looking to spread our message across the country, especially in time for the 2020 election cycle,” he said.
Modesto residents are planning a counter-protest at a local park across the street from the planned event.
