A new high-intensity crosswalk has been unveiled in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles to improve pedestrian safety.

This is the new HAWK Beacon crosswalk at 6th & Spaulding, connecting Park La Brea with LACMA. It’s meant to improve pedestrian safety. Drivers will need to get used to it. ⁦@KNX1070pic.twitter.com/wLQm4rqbSC

It’s located on Sixth Street at Spaulding, connecting Park La Brea with LACMA and the La Brea Tar Pits.

It consists of overhead lights, a single yellow on the bottom and two red lights on top.

First, the yellow flashes, then it goes solid, followed by double solid red lights meaning traffic needs to stop.

LA City Councilman David Ryu says "this hot beacon and these safety improvements are also crucial in adjusting the traffic accidents we have seen here."

"Too many people have been struck on streets like the one we are on."

Seleta Reynolds, who is GM Of Los Angeles’s Department of Transportation, said: "we want to welcome visitors to LA in a way that feels safe and comfortable, especially for people who live and work in this area and travel on it day in and day out."

It will take some getting used to for drivers because I saw a few cars go right through the solid red lights during test runs.
