A white woman in Rancho Mirage was caught on video demanding to see proof of a landscaper’s immigration status.
Juan Andrade was mowing lawns at an apartment complex when the woman approached him without wearing a mask.
“Like any other complex I was just doing the work for all of them, mowing the lawn. I passed by her apartment and when I turned around to do the second round that’s when I saw her standing,”Andrade told NBC Palm Springs.
Andrade said the same woman had previously harassed him three months ago by telling him to “go back to his country.”
This time he was prepared and videotaped the interaction.
In the clip, the mask-less woman doesn’t maintain social distancing protocols and gets up close to Andrade to ask, “Can you show me your papers?”
Andrade, who has worked for the landscape company for ten years, reported the incident to his boss and plans to avoid the area in the future.
While the woman’s identity has yet to be revealed, City Attorney Steve Quintanilla and Housing Authority Manager Marcus Aleman are initiating an investigation into the incident.
“The Rancho Mirage Housing Authority has a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behavior and the harassment of any one, including other tenants, visitors, guests and contracted vendors conducting work at its affordable senior housing properties,” Quintanilla and Aleman said in a statement to the news station.
