Hundreds of people took part in peaceful May Day protests, but a couple of dozen others allegedly went on a bit of a rampage, people who may be part of a Boyle Heights anti-gentrification group.

According to one report, the 24 protesters began marching at Mariachi Plaza and headed toward the Arts District.

LAPD officer Lizette Lomelli says then there was trouble. She tells KNX the members of the group also tried to use an ignited road flare to set fire to a nearby building and that they used wet paint to vandalize the property.  Then, someone got hurt.

The 24 people were arrested for blocking the roadway near 7th street and the 5 freeway.

A group has posted messages on social media slamming the arrests and insisting that no one was trying to set any fires.
