Battle Between LA County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff Villanueva Continues Over Reinstated Deputy

The struggle between the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the newly elected sheriff over his reinstatement of a deputy, who was fired over domestic abuse allegations,  continues to fester.

The board has even taken Sheriff Alex Villanueva to court over his rehiring of Caren Mandoyan, who volunteered on his election campaign.

The sheriff says he approached supervisors about providing them with what he knows about Mandoyan’s case in closed session, but they declined.

A spokesperson for Supervisor Janice Hahn says that’s not true.

When asked why he’s sticking his neck out on the matter, Villanueva said it’s about due process:

"Due process is important everywhere and we can't pick and choose who we decide to provide the due process to," he said.

The sheriff also admitted "could we probably had other ones up first and this one later? Yeah, that would be a smarter thing to do but hindsight is 20/20."

He insists that there were three fatal flaws that led to Mandoyan being fired under the previous sheriff and that no evidence of domestic violence was found in a review of the case.
