(KNX 1070) - A state lawmaker from Southern California is pushing a bill that would set-up a website to publicly shame parents who owe large amounts of back child support.
Palmdale-area Republican Tom Lackey says the so-called "deadbeat parent" website would show the names and photos of people who are $5,000 or more behind on their support payments.
Lackey says shaming works.
"What we are trying to do is use a very effective tool called 'peer pressure' to shape their behavior in a positive way," he said.
Bill 1498 "would require the department, on or before January 1, 2021, to create an internet website and make publicly available information regarding persons who are delinquent in the payment of court-ordered child support, as specified, including the obligor’s name, photograph, and the amount of child support owed," according to the bill online.
Similar websites have been set-up in other states, including Texas, Kansas and Arizona.
