Officials at Santa Anita Park are targeting March 22nd as the date to resume racing.
The main track has been open for limited training today but it remains closed for racing indefinitely as officials implement a series of safety protocols in the wake of 21 horse deaths at the facility since December 26th.
Some animal rights activists are calling for even bigger changes.
PETA says it wants to ban all medications in the week before a race and end the practice of beating horses with whips to make them run faster.
On Thursday, a newly retained track expert began a thorough inspection of Santa Anita Park's racing surface.
The announcement came hours after a 4-year-old filly named Let's Light the Way was injured during training and had to be euthanized, becoming the 21st horse to die at the track since December 26th.
Races and training have been suspended indefinitely at Santa Anita Park in response to the spate of horse deaths.
