SANTA MONICA (CNS) - A 41-year-old parolee sex offender was in custody today in connection with a series of prowling incidents and vehicle burglaries in Santa Monica, police reported.
Charles Marcell Newman was arrested Monday in the 500 block of South Flower Street in Los Angeles and booked at the Santa Monica Police Department jail, according to SMPD Lt. Saul Rodriguez.
The city attorney has charged him with two counts of prowling, vehicle tampering, receiving stolen property, failure to register as a sex offender and violating his parole, Rodriguez said.
About 3:10 a.m. on Jan. 14, Newman allegedly tried to enter a home in the 700 block of 25th Street. Two days later, he allegedly tried to enter a home in the 400 block of 24th Street about 1:30 a.m., and committed a vehicle theft about three hours later, Rodriguez said.
Newman is also suspected of a vehicle theft that occurred about 2:45 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of 14th Street, according to the lieutenant.
Details about why Newman was on parole and was required to register as a sex offender were not immediately available.
He's being held without bail, according to sheriff's inmate records.
