Are Nail Salons Spreading Coronavirus?

As many nail salons begin to re-open, it’s been revealed the role they played in spreading coronavirus in certain parts of the country.

According to Governor Gavin Newsom, nail salons are responsible for the outbreak in California, reported CNBC.

"This whole thing started in the state of California — the first community spread — in a nail salon," Newsom said during a press briefing. "I just wanted to remind you, remind everybody of that. I'm very worried about that.”

Newsom said the finding was especially troublesome considering many nail technicians routinely wear masks and gloves.

“As you may know, it's certainly informed me that many of the practices that you would otherwise expect of a modification were already in play in many of these salons with people that had procedure masks on, were using gloves and advancing higher levels of sanitation," he added.

While Newsom didn’t give specific details about the reported link between nail salons and the spread of COVID-19, experts have noted how the salons can be a potential source for infection.

"Nail salons are certainly a setting where- in the absence of protective equipment, or regular specific cleaning procedures- people are sitting in close proximity to each other," Dr. Anne Liu with Stanford Health Care told ABC7 News.

"They're next to each other, across from each other. Then adding physical contact on top of that, probably augments the risk of transmission."

Like other businesses, nail salons plan to implement new safety protocols for their staff upon opening to the public.

"We're going to take their temperature, they're going to have to sanitize their hands. We have facial masks for them, to provide for them if they are not wearing one," nail salon owner Linda Do told the news station. "And we've bought protective shields. Where, when you do your nails, it's like a sneeze guard."

Many states like Texas and Florida have started to allow nail salons to begin operating again.

On Friday, California began allowing low-risk businesses such as florists, clothing and book stores to open with curbside pick-up. This is part of the state’s phase two of modifying state-at-home orders.

California nail salons are expected to open as part of phase 3, but that is still far from happening.
