After a month and a half long investigation by the South Bureau Homicide Division, detectives were able to identify a female juvenile as the murder suspect.
LAPD Captain Jamie Bennett told KNX News' Pete Demetriou the first thing detectives did was focus on who was in the area at the time.
"Detectives were able to locate surveillance video of what had occurred in vehicles driving in the area. We were very fortunate; the detectives worked tirelessly to determine the vehicle that was involved and ultimately identify the offender," said Bennett.
Detectives used other means to find the 14-year-old girl, who is said to be the driver and only occupant in the car at the time of the shooting.
A weapon recovered in the course of the investigation has been tied to the killing, and even though a motive for the drive-by has not been firmly established, the evidence was strong enough for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office to file murder charges in this case.
Detectives took the juvenile into custody on Monday, May 6, without incident, and by Tuesday, the D.A. filed the murder charge.
Anyone with additional information is urged to contact South Bureau Homicide Division detectives at (323) 786-5100, call the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477) or go directly to ww.lacrimestoppers.org.
