For about a century, visitors to Catalina Island could rent horses for trail rides, but operations were shut down in 2008.

After over 15 years, the tradition is back, thanks to Jeff Skelton.

"A couple of years ago, I had this idea that somebody should bring back the horses because riding the island is just such a special experience, Skelton told KNX News' Emily Valdez. "Finally, I realized that person, I guess, is going to be me."

Skelton bought 16 experienced trail horses, built a ranch, and opened Catalina Island Horseback Adventures.

"Just a few weeks ago, we were granted our permit to open, and we started doing rides back on the trails here in Avalon Canyon," Skelton said.

He said the horses are experienced in giving lifts to riders of all skill levels.

"The herd we have now, half came from Wyoming and half from Arizona. They came from operations that did guided trail rides just like this,” Skelton said. “So these are horses experienced in this type of rider."

Children must be at least 9 years old to ride, and Skelton said not to forget to make a reservation. Prices start at $150 for an hour, with the option to go for two hours.
