A month after Big Bear Valley’s beloved bald eagles Jackie and Shadow welcomed two new chicks, the babies have officially been named.
Over 54,000 name choices were submitted to Friends of Big Bear Valley. A computer randomly narrowed them down to 30, and a group of local third, fourth, and fifth graders selected the two winning names: Sunny and Gizmo.
Friends of Big Bear Valley’s Sandy Steers said usually only third graders are recruited to choose names, but since Jackie and Shadow’s eggs didn’t hatch for the last two years, the age pool was expanded to give current fourth and fifth graders a chance.
Steers said Sunny and Gizmo are growing quickly and keeping their parents busy.
“I've noticed that Shadow seems to take a lot more care sometimes in the day than Jackie, but the flying squirrels have been very active at night and so Jackie's been working hard at night, so I think she needs a little more break in the daytime,” she told KNX News’ Karen Adams.
