A Sierra Madre couple is working with California Fish and Wildlife officers to deal with an unbearable guest living under their house.

A black bear, nicknamed Junior, took up residence underneath Bob and Susan Nesler’s home several weeks ago, squeezing through an opening in the porch to create a makeshift nest under their floorboards.

Tim Daly with California Fish and Wildlife told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou that going in after Junior and tranquilizing him isn’t an option, since moving the 400-pound bear out of the crawl space would be no easy task. But if Junior comes out on his own, they can tranquilize him and move him to another area.

“We also have motion activated sprinklers set up to discourage that bear from going back in once it does leave,” Daly said. “And then we're also asking the couple that lives there to do a better job of securing that crawl space with something like a strong metal grate of some sort that when the bear returns, it won't be able to go back inside.”

The Neslers say they’ve seen plenty of bears in their 27 years in Sierra Madre, but this is the first time one has taken up residence under their house – and hopefully the last.
