
The City Council Tuesday is expected to finalize new parking rates for a lot at the World Cruise Center in San Pedro, which port officials say is needed to generate more revenue.
In early April, the City Council preliminary approved an ordinance to raise parking rates from $20 to $22, and further increase it to $24 by Jan. 1, 2026. Parking for the first hour will remain free of charge, with each subsequent hour continuing to be charged two dollars until reaching the maximum daily rate.

The ordinance requires a second vote before it can be enacted.
According to port officials, once the fee increases, the Harbor Department is expected to generate about $247,403, or 4.6%, in the upcoming fiscal year. The department also estimated that it could generate $544,805, or 8.7% increase, in FY 2026-27.
As the city of Los Angeles faces a nearly $1 billion deficit in the upcoming fiscal year, officials are exploring ways to generate revenue.
As elected officials consider ways to increase revenues, some options may lead to higher taxes, fees, and other costs for taxpayers. The city is also considering bond measures to create revenue streams for specific needs, such as maintenance and construction of fire stations.
The City Council recently approved a plan to increase trash collection fees, the first rate adjustment in 17 years. Elected officials are hoping to start the new fees by January 2026, but further approvals are required before the rate change can be enacted.
