Pet owners living along the Venice Canals are nervous after several dogs have died suddenly.

Over the last 10 days, at least five neighborhood dogs have died, and one is currently in the ICU, according to the Venice Canals Association.

Officials say that symptoms have included collapsing, vomiting, seizures/cardiac arrest, foaming at the mouth, and sudden weakness or lethargy.

KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke with pet owners in the area about their thoughts on the matter.

“I don't know what to say,” one woman walking her dog, Alfred, said. “There's always something that's happening here that is insane, and you kind of just get used to dealing with it. I know no one did anything when the two ladies were murdered in the canals. Like, it just, the city doesn't super care and like we find out about that happening well before any like police department releases anything.”

Another woman said she was avoiding the area.

“Just staying on the boundaries of it,” she said.

While it’s unclear exactly what is happening to the dogs, officials said the possible causes that are being considered at this time include toxic algae bloom, rat poison, and other toxins or viruses.

Dog owners have been urged to keep their dogs leashed and to avoid canal water, puddles, and shared bowls.
