The greater-alarm fire was reported about 9:15 a.m. Friday at a four- story office building housing a private school at 320 N. Vermont Ave. , north of Beverly Boulevard, in East Hollywood, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department, who said the school located at the building is the Hubbard College of Administration International.

First arriving crews saw smoke coming from the third floor of the four- story building, Humphrey said.

A total of 114 firefighters battled the blaze, which involved going inside the building to douse flames in a third-floor room in the northeast corner of the over-25,000-square-foot structure, he said.

At the same time, crews worked to protect property in adjacent rooms and the floor below, Humphrey said.

It took just over 45 minutes "to access, confine and fully extinguish heavy fire" in the room where the fire was centered, he said.

"A functional alarm system alerted ... occupants to safely exit the structure prior to LAFD arrival," Humphrey said, adding that crews were "continuing salvage efforts to protect property within the structure from collateral smoke and water (damage)."

The cause of the fire was under active investigation, he said.

Earlier Friday morning, 109 LAFD firefighters tackled a "major emergency structure" at 2124 E. Violet St., on the eastern end of downtown L.A.
