Some parents are hesitant to send their children back to in-person learning when the Los Angeles Unified School District reopens its schools on Aug. 16. The district offers an online independent study option for families who aren't quite ready to return.
Opting for independent study for the upcoming school session can be done through the school districts website. Start by logging into the parent portal on the LAUSD website. Then go to the “my students” section and select the “online program” link.
If students do not select the independent study program by Aug. 6, they will automatically be enrolled in in-person learning. Online programs are available for transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.
According to the L.A. Times, the independent study program will differ from last year’s remote learning. The online, independent program is called the City of Angels School and is run by the district. Students who chose to remain remote for the upcoming year will temporarily withdraw from their school and be placed with new teachers. Students can always return to their schools, but the curriculums may not be on the same schedule.
The City of Angels School schedule is a mix of live instruction and independent work. LAUSD has said if families try independent study and realize the program is not working for their children, it is always possible to rejoin in-person teaching.
