Earthquake and tropical storm on the same day: coincidence?

In the middle of Southern California’s first tropical storm in more than 80 years, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Ventura County near Ojai on Saturday afternoon.

Dr. Lucy Jones, Southern California's preeminent earthquake expert, told KNX News the natural disaster double whammy was a “really fun coincidence.”

“Water pressures within the earth can affect things, but you don’t change the water pressure deep in the earth through one day of rain, even heavy rain,” she said.

Jones said Saturday’s quake was a thrust faulting earthquake, the most common type in Ventura County. It began with foreshocks on Saturday morning, and so far there have been close to 50 aftershocks. Nine have been above a magnitude 3.0.

“We’ll be seeing aftershocks to this earthquake probably over the next few weeks,” Jones said.
