The Feds have put out a warning to local law enforcement agencies of possible terrorist attacks here in the U.S. by “sleeper cells” after they intercepted messages broadcast on a new shortwave radio channel, believed to be of Iranian origin.
Officials said that within days of the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader on February 28th, cryptic messages were broadcast globally on a new shortwave radio frequency. It was described as a monotone male voice that first says “attention, attention” in Persian, and then rattles off a series of random numbers.
Officials think that could be a signal to sleeper cells here in the US…to go on the attack.
“There's a concern about either lone wolves to begin with, which would sympathize with the Iranian government, but primarily there's concern about sleeper cells out there,” Dennis Franks is a retired FBI supervisory Special Agent told KNX News’ Jon Baird.
He added that LAX would always be a prime target, and that major events here in the area could also be targets, such as the Oscars and World Cup events.
“The airport and big events are always potential targets, and I think there's heightened concern right now about that, but it also could be any number of small things that people don't expect,” he said.
No credible specific threats have been uncovered at this time.
