LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin announced on Wednesday he would be dropping his bid for L.A. County supervisor to pursue the office of state controller instead.

“I see this as an opportunity to take my experience and the work that I’ve done and to really do that for the whole state of California,” he told The Los Angeles Daily News on Wednesday.

Galperin said the decision to shift tack to a statewide office bid came after he realized “that the way that I can make a tremendous difference in Los Angeles, in the city, in the county and for the whole of the state of California, is through the job of state controller.”

Galperin will face two Democrats in the race for controller, including Malia Cohen, who serves on the state Board of Equalization, and Monterey Park City Councilmember Yvonne Yiu. Lanhee Chen, a Republican and former political strategist, is also running.

Galperin said he had received the endorsement of outgoing Controller Betty Yee, who had also endorsed Cohen.

The primary for the state’s controller race is June 7, with the top two finishers facing off in the Nov. 8 general election.
