LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas was expected to officially announce his retirement on Tuesday, with Mayor Eric Garcetti to follow by nominating a woman as his replacement.
Deputy Kristin Crowley would be the first woman to lead the L.A. Fire Department in its 135 year history, if confirmed.
Crowley first took the firefighters' exam in 1998, placing among the top 50 scores out of 16,000 applicants, according to the department. She rose through the LAFD ranks, to firefighter paramedic, engineer, fire inspector, captain I, captain II, battalion chief, assistant chief, fire marshal, and deputy chief.
"Throughout her distinguished career, Kristin Crowley has proven her brilliance, determination and bravery on the job again and again," Garcetti said of his nominee. "She's also shown this city her heart, with her tireless commitment to helping students access life-changing educational opportunities."
Terrazas is a 35-year veteran of the fire department. He was confirmed to lead LAFD in 2014.
