One day after his surprise appearance on Capitol Hill, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to federal tax charges in downtown Los Angeles Thursday afternoon.
The president’s son is facing nine counts, including three felonies, for allegedly refusing to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes from 2016 through 2019. The indictment alleges that Biden spent millions on an “extravagant lifestyle” including drugs, escorts, and exotic cars rather than paying his taxes.
Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, claims the charges are politically motivated, saying in a statement that “based on the facts and the law, if Hunter's last name was anything other than Biden, the charges … would not have been brought.”
Biden faces a maximum of 17 years in prison if convicted of all charges.
Yesterday, two House committees advanced resolutions to hold Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena in connection with the GOP’s impeachment inquiry into his father. Biden made a brief appearance in the audience during the Oversight Committee meeting, but walked out as soon as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene started speaking.
Lowell told reporters outside the committee room that Republicans were using Biden “as a surrogate to attack his father.”
