Huntington Beach will hold a special election on June 10 to decide two ballot initiatives related to the city’s controversial library policies.

One initiative would repeal a library book review board that the city council created to restrict minors’ access to books deemed inappropriate. The review board is the target of a recent lawsuit by several civil rights groups.

The second would make it harder to privatize the city’s library system – a possibility the city council explored last year, but ultimately dropped.

The Orange County Register reports that the city could have waited to put the two measures on the Nov. 2026 ballot, but opted instead for a special election, which will cost the city more than $1 million.
