Our KNX Hero of the Week survived the Montecito mudslides and is now helping survivors of the recent, deadly floods in Texas cope with recovery.
Kim Cantin has dealt with unimaginable loss. She lost her husband Dave, her teenage son Jack, and the family's pet dog in the devastating Montecito mudslides of 2018

Her teenage daughter, Lauren, survived despite being buried alive for six hours. Kim, herself, was swept up by the ferocious 30-foot wave of mud and boulders that slammed into their family home on that late January night.
Since then, Kim has become a symbol of resiliency, turning that darkness into a symbol of light. She wrote “Where Yellow Flowers Bloom,” which details her journey through grief and rebuilding.

The author and speaker also shared her story to help those in Central Texas who were impacted by the deadly floods over the July 4th weekend.
“Invest the time and effort into healing that you've gone through something so unimaginable - sudden traumatic death,” she told Heroes host Heather Jordan. “It's sudden traumatic that these people are in right now of their loved ones and so there's grief and there's trauma. This kind of sudden traumatic thing changes your nervous system. There's methods to help calm that nervous system down and help you process the grief because if you don't process the grief, it'll show up in other ways.”
For Cantin, showing her story brings her some peace.

“There can be good out of this tragedy, and if good is helping other people who need the help, then that's the gift,” she said.
