Our KNX Hero of the Week, Steven Angel, is using rhythm to heal anxiety, increase reading capabilities, and improve life skills!
Angel is the President and Founder of the non-profit, Drumming For Your Life Institute.

“We're a nonprofit organization. We work all over L.A. County,” he told Heroes host Heather Jordan. “Our two programs are the Reading and Rhythm program, which is a literacy program. It's pre-K through 12th grade, but we also work with adults, and we also have a Life Skills Drumming program, which is a therapeutic program. We work in the juvenile justice systems, and we also work with adults, some with dual diagnosis, which means they have an addiction problem plus mental health. So schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, things like that.
Angel has been a musician and a performer since he was 3 years old. He performed with Buddy Rich's band at just 6 years old, and by the age of 12, he was performing with his own band, opening up for groups like Herman's Hermits and the Animals.

At 16, he recorded an album with Jimi Hendrix's bassist Noel Redding and even featured Hendrix on a track.

Angel knows how music can affect a person. He even spent four months immersed in a classroom creating this unique, cutting-edge program. These last 25 years, he's been harnessing the power of rhythm to help people succeed.

“You know, my goal was to create the most powerful programs I could possibly create to help as many people as I possibly can, and it's as pure as that,” he said.
